Advice in an Envelope

Everyone seals one piece of advice for the couple. It opens the next time this group plays — the first-anniversary dinner, say.

What it feels like

Every couple gets advice on their wedding day. Most of it is forgotten by the cake. Tonight's will be sealed, and kept. Here's what you do. Take a private turn each and write one piece of advice for the couple. The envelopes are sealed in the group's Almanac, and nobody reads them tonight. They open the next time this group plays, at the first-anniversary dinner, say. Then, before anyone owns up, the room guesses who wrote each one. Every right guess scores two points.

How to play

  1. Take a private turn each and write a short note to this group.
  2. The notes are sealed in the Almanac.
  3. They open the next time you meet, and the room guesses who wrote each one.

Scoring: When they open, 2 points for each right guess.

You'll get prompts like

  • “Write one piece of advice for the couple's first year, to be opened next time we play”
  • “Write the thing you hope the couple remembers on a hard day, to be opened next time we play”

What you need

3 to 10 people and one phone, tablet or laptop to pass around — or everyone on their own phone in a room. Nothing to download, no accounts. The best lines can be sealed into your group's Almanac and come back in later games.
