What it feels like

Every good birthday needs stories, and the best ones are about the person at the head of the table. Tonight, you tell one. But you don't finish it. Here's what you do. The tellers each pick a true story and secretly write down how it really ended. Then they tell it out loud, and stop right before the good part. Everyone else guesses the ending. A close guess scores two. But if nobody sees it coming, the teller takes three.

How to play

  1. A few of you are the tellers. In a private turn, each teller gets a story prompt — like “a time a plan went completely sideways” — picks a true story and writes its real ending in one line.
  2. On your round, tell the story out loud and stop right before the ending: “…and then —”.
  3. Everyone else says what they think happened. Then the teller reveals the ending.

Scoring: 2 points for everyone the teller says was close. If nobody saw it coming, the teller scores 3.

You'll get prompts like

  • “A story about the birthday person that they'd rather you didn't tell”
  • “The first time you met the birthday person”

What you need

3 to 10 people and one phone, tablet or laptop to pass around — or everyone on their own phone in a room. Nothing to download, no accounts. The best lines can be sealed into your group's Almanac and come back in later games.
