The Ghost Light

A lakeside campfire, a ghost story about a drowned ferrywoman, and a lantern that really does appear on the water at ten o'clock. By the time everyone walks back from the dock, the family kitty is gone. Read it aloud round the fire, then accuse someone — in secret.

Play The Ghost Light now

What it feels like

Pull your chair in closer to the fire. A hundred years ago, a woman called Lil rowed the ferry across Loon Lake... until the storm that took her. They say that on the last night of summer, at ten o'clock, her lantern still crosses the water. Tonight, it does. And by the time everyone walks back from the dock... something else is gone too.

How to play

  1. The story comes in four parts. Each is read out loud by someone different — everyone else just listens.
  2. Between parts, the screen gives the table something to argue about. Every clue you need is in the story.
  3. At the end, everyone accuses in private: who took the kitty, and where it is now.
  4. Then the solution is read out, with every clue and where it was hiding.

Scoring: 3 points for naming who took it, 2 for finding the money.

What you need

3 to 10 people and one phone, tablet or laptop to pass around — or everyone on their own phone in a room. Nothing to download, no accounts. The best lines can be sealed into your group's Almanac and come back in later games.
